Required Secondary Powers: Determination

Let us start with determination. When I first started out, there was a "Honeymoon" Phase. This initial excitement helped me push through the first small bumps in the road. However, after a few months, I came to the painful realization that reality did not match my dream very much. I still could see where I wanted to go, but it was going to be a much longer road then I first anticipated.

This is where my natural determination, or pure stubbornness if you ask my wife, came into play. Even though at times it was really hard, and at times I wanted to quit I pushed through. Yes while this does come naturally to me, it is still something I need to develop on a daily basis.

There were a few times through this process where I started to give up hope and struggled with depression. I wanted to give up on everything in general. However, a while back while listening to the books on WWII written by Winston Churchill, I was inspired to make a choice. I made the choice that I was not going to give up. I was going to push through, and I was going to make this work. It was this choice that sparked the determination and the passion to succeed.

So in order to develop your determination, you need to make the choice, deep down to succeed, to not give up to not quit. It is a daily choice. Its the choice you make when people tell you will not succeed, when you make a mistake and upset a client, its the choice you make when you make a mistake that costs you a lot of money. It is the choice to get up and keep going and not stop in the middle of a bad situation. As a preacher I heard once said "If you're going through hell, don't stop" That is what determination is, making the choice to get up and push through. If you can do this, day in and day out you will find the strength to push through, it will become easier and you will have a strong chance of succeeding.
