Do Not Build Up Your New Small Business As A Commodity
BY JASON ST CLAIR
I recently got done speaking with a new potential client. Who they were and what they doesn’t matter for this story that I am going to tell, what matters was their mindset that they had. It’s the same mindset that almost every one of us entrepreneurs have when we decided to go into business ourselves. We tend to start to day dream and have delusions of grandeur. We compare our business venture idea to others that are out there and have great success. Our ego takes over and we think that if they did it, so can I! Not only that, I can do it better than them! We start to imagine having multiple locations, creating a factory of sorts. In other words we want to immediately commodity our business idea.
How can I Mc Donaldize my business?! Before you get to that point, I want you stop and put a quick halt on that mindset. Unless you have resources up the wazzo, you will fail and fail miserably. By resources I mean contacts, business networking relationships and plenty of cash. With those resources you might be able to outpace the competition and grow. But, if you are reading this, you most likely don’t have any of those, if you do, they are very limited so your actions must be well calculated, honest and sincere. If you are going to start a small business you better sell that small business as yourself. First build your brand by selling everyone why you are unique and special from the competition. Why you are different from the others. Because, you are different and you do bring a special set of unique skills to the table. Sell what you have and what you are, build up your small business through honest, hard work, offering a great product. Have this mindset, not one of commodification. This will help you grow your business to the point of expanding, not thinking from the finish line back so to speak
